PRESS RELEASE - LIME’s commitment to youth and local football was reaffirmed by its support for the recent Babonneau Inter-Community Under-15 Football Competition.
The tournament was held on Sunday 6 April at the La Guerre Playing Field, hosted by the officers of Babonneau Police Station in an effort to cultivate positive values through their Community Policing Program.
The tournament also got the backing of the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports and was part of local activities held to mark the first-ever International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, as declared by UNESCO.
The tournament brought together 16 teams from around the Babonneau District for a full day of exciting football action. Featuring over 150 young men and women, the competition kicked off with a round-robin phase, followed by a series of knockout matches, with the top teams from each phase moving to the semi-finals and finals.
The Babonneau Secondary School team emerged champions after defeating Fond Assau in an action-packed encounter. The LIME-sponsored team, Plateau, battled valiantly to advance to the semi-finals, getting into the knockout rounds by beating Team El Paso from Cacao in a thrilling sudden-death faceoff.
Each of the 10 members of the winning Babonneau Secondary team got an Alcatel phone from LIME. The team also received a trophy, gold medals and $500 cash. All of the 16 participating teams will be treated to a sky ride experience courtesy of Rainforest Sky Rides of Chassin as a reward for being part of the competition.
Terry Finisterre, LIME’s Corporate Communications Executive lauded the Babonneau Police for organizing the competition, expressing LIME’s pride to support the initiative.
“We tip our hats to the organisers, coaches, and most of all the players who put in a lot of hard work to make the event a success. Tournaments like the Babonneau Inter-Community Under-15 Football Competition impact the lives of young Saint Lucians in positive and wholesome ways. They also help shape the leaders of tomorrow and deserve a place of prominence on LIME’s sponsorship calendar,” Terry added.
Inspector Ronald Phillip of the Babonneau Police Station said, “We are extremely grateful to LIME for coming on board as a sponsor. Their support gave a real boost to the tournament. We look forward to engaging more of the youths from the Babonneau community in such initiatives as part of our Community Policing program, which is aimed at developing a stronger bond with the residents and a culture of health and wellness in neighbourhoods across the district.”
