(PRESS RELEASE) – Signing Ceremonies for two Grant Assistance for the Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) will be held in Saint Lucia on Thursday 16 January 2020.
Both projects, selected for funding under Japan’s fiscal year 2019, are expected to benefit the recipient organizations as well as the communities in which they are located.
The first ceremony will be held at 10:00 am at Ministry of External Affairsin Rodney Bay. The grant contract concerning “The Project for Reusing Secondhand Garbage Collection Trucks in Castries” will be signed by Ambassador Tatsuo Hirayama as donor, and Mr. Justin Sealy, General Manager of the Authority, as recipient. Through the grant, US $80,041 will be provided for the procurement of 3 rehabilitated garbage trucks, which will improve garbage collection in 13 communities within Central Castries and enhance the quality of life for around 10,000 residents.
Training will also be provided to ensure proper use of the equipment. This project will be carried out in collaboration
with the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Diplomacy based in Tokyo. The Honourable Dr. Gale T. C. Rigobert, Minister of Education, Innovation, Gender Relations and Sustainable Development and the Honourable Sarah Flood Beaubrun, Minister with responsibility for External Affairs and Parliamentary Representative for Castries Central, are expected to attend.
A second ceremony relating to the “Project for Improving Health Environment at Piaye Combined School” will be held at 2:30 pm on the school compound in Choiseul. Principal Jeanneve CharleryEtienne will sign the grant contact alongside the Ambassador, signalling the start of the project and allowing for the provision of a grant totalling US $62,189, to be used for the renovation of an existing toilet, the construction of a new toilet and the construction of a multipurpose facility. It is expected that these additions will contribute to a more sanitary and overall improved learning environment for the more than 100 students and 10 teachers of the school. The Honourable Bradley Felix, Parliamentary Representative for Choiseul/Saltibus, as well as Mr. Tsutomu Kobayashi, Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), are expected to attend.
The Government of Japan welcomes further opportunities to work with the Government and the People of Saint Lucia, with a view to strengthening the bonds of friendship and mutual understanding which exist between the two countries.
