(SNO) — The Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards (SLBS) is warning the public that there are illegal cigarettes on the island and they should not be purchased.
The organization said it is currently working with the Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority and the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority to control pilfering during the transportation and disposal process.
The product in question is Chase USA, 20 class filter cigarettes, which the SLBS said does not conform to SLNS 27: 2016 Specification for Labelling of Tobacco Products (CRS 26: 2013, MOD) to which compliance is mandatory.
It said the cigarettes entered the island illegally.
“The public is strongly advised not to purchase nor consume said product,” the SLBS said on Friday. “Vendors are to cease the sale and distribution and submit any stock in their possession to the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards for disposal.”
According to the SLBS, anyone who sells, offers for sale or supplies to another person any goods, service, process or practice for which a compulsory standard is declared and which does not conform to that standard commits an offence under section 32 (a) of the Standard Act.
“The public is advised that SLBS intends to prosecute anyone found selling or distributing this product and a person found guilty of an offence under Section 32 is liable on summary conviction to a fine of $10,000 and to an additional penalty of $1,000 for every day on which the offence continues or to imprisonment for 6 months,” the SLBS stated.
