ANTIGUA OBSERVER – A call for Antigua and Barbuda’s Citizenship by Investment programme to be in synch with those of other Caribbean countries which have a CIP.

The advice comes from leader of St. Lucia’s opposition United Workers’ Party, Allan Chastanet.

He says his concern harmonisation is crucial because CIP passport holders have access to all Caribbean countries.

Chastanet also wants the programmes to be more transparent.

“Politicians should have no involvement. We think that the boards that are appointed, just like our electoral commission or the boundary commission, must be independent and autonomous. There must be legislation to guide where moneys can be spent and reports provided on a regular basis to the public as to how much money has been raised and where the funds have gone.”

Last October, St. Lucia became the latest Caribbean country to offer a citizenship by investment programme.

Chastanet says the United Workers’ Party supports such an initiative cause of the financial benefits it can bring to the country.

He promises that changes will be made to St. Lucia’s CIP if his party wins the general election on June 6th.
