Participants at the 2013 CIBC FirstCaribbean walk for the cure.
PRESS RELEASE - When the third annual CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank Walk for the Cure takes place this weekend, walkers from the bank will be joined by members of staff from a number of corporate partners who have come on board this year to help boost the amount of funding raised.
Professional services firm, Deloitte, has come on board this year as a regional sponsor for the activity, which takes place in 17 countries.
CIBC FirstCaribbean businesses around the Caribbean are taking part in the event along with its parent company, CIBC, which is in its 18th year of supporting the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s Run for the Cure.
Since 1992, CIBC employees and volunteers have raised more than $36 million for breast cancer research.
The Caribbean event raises funds for the care and support of persons fighting the disease across the Caribbean. In some cases, the bank’s employees will hold a walk and include their friends, family and corporate partners, and in other instances, the event will be held in association with a national cancer association walk.
In St. Lucia the Walk for the Cure will be held this Sunday October 5th. The walk will commence at 6:00 a.m. at the CIBC FirstCaribbean Rodney Bay Branch, in the Mardini Building parking lot, with participants walking to Pigeon Island National Landmark and back.
At the completion of the walk participants will be treated to light refreshments, entertainment and interactive talks with medical professionals.
Participants are asked to contribute $20.00 towards registration for the walk, with all funds raised through registration and other activities to support Faces of Cancer.
Co-Executive Sponsor of the bank’s regional Walk for the Cure, Managing Director, Human Resources, Ella Hoyos, noted: “This is a significant achievement for our bank.
Cancer is a national concern and any one of us or our relatives can be affected at any time. Persons living with cancer need all the support they can get.
Our staff has been hard at work for weeks raising funds for this project. We are very proud of what they have been able to achieve.”
The other Executive Sponsor for the event, Trevor Torzsas, added: “I am extremely proud of our team for taking the CIBC FirstCaribbean Walk for the Cure to such heights! We have raised over $125,000 so far this year, which is truly an amazing achievement! This weekend, we will have well over 2,500 walkers around the Caribbean joining together to walk and raise funds for cancer identification, treatment and care. We have now surpassed over ¼ of a million US dollars over the past three years and I am confident we will continue to improve on this amount every year”.
In thanking Deloitte for becoming the first regional sponsor of the Walk, CIBC FirstCaribbean’s Chief Executive Officer, Rik Parkhill summed up the bank’s reason for becoming involved in the cause: “As a responsible corporate citizen, we have always been at the forefront of providing assistance to the communities in which we operate.
We have pledged to give annually to communities in the Caribbean, but for us it is about more than handing over a cheque. It is about becoming involved in our communities and responding wherever we can.”
Walkers from Deloitte will join CIBC FirstCaribbean in the countries in the Caribbean where it operates – The Bahamas, Barbados, British and United States Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dutch Caribbean, and Trinidad & Tobago.
