Flooding in Bexon caused by trough system.

Another country, this time Mexico, has extended help and support to Saint Lucia following the Christmas Eve trough.

Two weeks after a visit to Saint Lucia by a Mexican delegation led by Foreign Affairs Minister Jose Antonio Meade Kuribena, the government of Mexico has donated US$500, 000 for post trough rehabilitation works.

While in Saint Lucia on February 7, 2014, the Mexican delegation was briefed by Alva Baptiste, Minister for External Affairs, International Trade and Civil Aviation on the effects of the Christmas Eve trough and reiterated Prime minister Anthony’s call for financial assistance to assist with recovery.

The visit which was described by Kuribena as a fact finding mission to “identify structural ways through which we can strengthen our relationship” followed a plea for assistance by Prime Minister Anthony at the CELAC Summit held in Cuba.

The government of Mexico has made a number of scholarships available to Saint Lucians and has also provided technical and financial support for many projects. Mexico has agreed to contribute to the upgrade of the water system in the Mabouya Valley. Already, Mexico has made available a “green house” to assist ongoing efforts at diversifying production in the agricultural sector.

Dr Anthony has extended thanks to the government and people of Mexico for its donation and its unwavering support over the years.
