(PRESS RELEASE) – The 34th Meeting of the Committee of Experts of the Follow-Up Mechanism for the Implementation of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption (MESICIC), today adopted by consensus Saint Lucia’s first country report.
The MESICIC is an Anti-corruption Mechanism which brings together OAS Member States to review their legal frameworks and institutions within the context of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption (IACAC).
Having acceded to the Convention, Saint Lucia joined the MESICIC in April 2018, at which time the Fifth Round of Reviews of the MESICIC was already underway. Committed to combating and addressing corruption and seeking to ensure compliance with commitments made in joining the MESICIC, Saint Lucia’s First Report was presented to the Committee of Experts at its meeting held in Washington D.C. March 9-12, 2020.
The delegation led by H.E. Anton Edmunds, Ambassador to the USA and Permanent Representative to the OAS, comprised Ms. Juliana Alfred, Permanent Secretary within the Attorney General’s Chambers, Mrs. Brenda Portland-Reynolds, Solicitor General and Mrs. Juliet Mallet Phillip, Minister Counsellor in the Mission.
The report, formally presented by the Solicitor General for consideration by peer countries, detailed the mechanisms existing within Saint Lucia to address the monitoring, prevention and combating of corruption in those categories identified within the Fifth Round, as well as identified areas for strengthening. Saint Lucia’s review principally addressed the hiring process of public servants and the Government’s procurement regime. Meanwhile an Inter-Ministerial Committee endorsed by the Cabinet of Ministers has already been established to focus on Convention requirements and recommendations with a view to finalizing a national policy paper and Action Plan.
The delegation took the opportunity to meet with a variety of OAS officials to explore potential opportunities for cooperation.
