(PRESS RELEASE) – The St. Lucia Social Development Fund (SSDF) and the Water & Sewerage Company (WASCO)
have signed an agreement to increase the availability of pipe borne water to the Vieux Sucieux Community.

The agreement was signed at the Water and Sewerage Company (WASCO) Administrative Building Castries, on Wednesday December 11, 2019.

The Vieux Sucieux Water Supply Expansion Sub- Project is funded by the Caribbean Development Bank, under the ninth cycle of the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF 9). The project is intended to channel potable water to households in the Vieux Sucieux community.

Executive Director of the Saint Lucia Social Development Fund (SSDF) Allison Mathurin provided insight on the different problems that Vieux Sucieux residents encountered over the years.

“The Government of Saint Lucia (GOSL) and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) in collaboration with WASCO have signed this agreement to provide water to the Veiux Sueiux Community. We look forward to seeing residents with pipe borne water at their homes. Over the years the residents of Vieux Sucieux had to resort to rain water harvesting and they also had to rely on the community pond and that come with health issues. Many residents had to purchase and truck water during the dry season.”

The facility will be constructed at an estimated cost of EC2.1 Million Dollars.

Minister for Equity, Social Justice, Local Government and Empowerment and Parliamentary Representative for Gros-Islet Hon. Lenard Montoute expressed relief on behalf of residents who, to date have experienced limited access to pipe borne water.

“On behave of the residents and Government of Saint Lucia and the CDB who has provides more than half of the resources I would like to say thanks. Over 100 persons will receive pipe borne water. You were also told of a community pond which many persons used as a substitute for pipe borne water. This was brought about health issues among both adults and children. This situation will finally be a thing of the past and their lives and health will improve.”

Clean safe water is a privilege that is often taken for granted in developed countries and one that is not always accessible in the developing nations.
