(SNO) — The Saint Lucia Civil Service Association (CSA) says it will continue to pursue the long-running contention between the union and light and power company, St. Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC).
The two organizations have been at odds over a matter relating to retirement age at the company, and the power company has challenged a ruling by the Labour Tribunal over the interpretation of the law when it comes to it.
President of the CSA, Cyprian Montrope, said the union will continue to pursue the matter in 2019.
“Our issues with LUCELEC remain on the front burner and we will continue to pursue all available legal options to secure what is just and right for our members,” Montrope said in a statement.
He said the CSA cherishes its “record of operating as a democratic and transparent union that places the interest of the membership at the forefront of our activities”.
“We look forward to securing a better deal for members in 2019 and will continue steadfastly in our pursuit of social justice and in securing a safe, healthy and productive working environment for all workers in this country,” he stated.
Montrope said 2018 had its fair share of challenges for the CSA and more are expected in 2019.
He urged members not to lose focus.
“Members should not lose hope but must stay focused and ready to respond to calls for action if and when it becomes necessary,” he stated.
He also said the membership of the organization has grown and it has regained its rightful place and the “biggest and best union” in Saint Lucia.
Montrope noted that the union has witnessed “attack” on its organization and its members on different fronts.
“However, we will not be discouraged and will continue to represent the interest of our membership in the various branches and workplaces in Saint Lucia,” he remarked. “Last year, we were able to settle at least seven collective agreements and are in the process of negotiating several others, including the one with the government of Saint Lucia, which is due to expire in March 2019.”
He pointed out that the CSA remains committed to the Trade Union Federation (TUF) and will continue to work collectively and collaboratively with the remaining affiliates in its quest to arrive at an amicable settlement.
