Prime Minister Allen Chastanet (Third from left sitting) with Taiwanese private sector officials

(CMC) – St. Lucia says it will remain committed to its relationship with Taiwan that China regards as a renegade province.

St. Lucia is among a handful of Caribbean countries that have maintained diplomatic relations with Taipei despite China’s move to have countries worldwide embrace its “one China’ policy.

Prime Minister Allen Chastanet, who is on an official visit to Taiwan has praised the Asian country for its support to developing nations and reiterated that Castries would continue to stand with its friends.

We, St. Lucia, even if we are in the minority, stand shoulder to shoulder with Taiwan,” he said, adding “we boldly reaffirm here as we did in the World Health Assembly, the United Nations and elsewhere on the world stage our friendship.”

Chastanet, who is on a four-day visit to Taiwan, said the two countries face similar challenges on the world stage and they must continue to stand together.

A government statement issued here said that Chastanet, who is being accompanied by a delegation which includes Minister for Economic Development Guy Joseph, held discussions with Taiwanese officials on cooperation in the areas of technology, agriculture, trade and assistance in the area of infrastructure with financing for the redevelopment of the Hewanorra International Airport.

The statement said that President Tsai Ing-wen said she hopes to visit St. Lucia and urged continued cooperation between the countries.

She said her government will actively encourage the private sector here to invest in St. Lucia.
