(GIS) – The Digitization Centre is the winner of the Department of Public Service’s first ever Open House Competition. The Ministry of Equity, Social Justice, and Empowerment, and the Office of Parliament emerged second and third place winners respectively.

The Open House Competition formed part of the week of activities in observance of Public Service Week (June 19 – 23). Over ten agencies participated in the event which took place both in-house and outdoor at the Castries Waterfront, showcasing various products and services.

Chantal Wilson-Lawrence, Chairperson of the Public Service Day Committee said she was pleased with the level of support and participation.

“Indeed, I would say that the Open House was a success. Despite the weather we still had a number of departments who participated: Customs and Excise, Parliament Office, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health and Wellness, Department of Public Service, Department of Commerce, Department of Equity, Audit, Fisheries, Forestry, and we can go on and on. The various agencies were excited, and it is something that we would like to continue going forward, so hopefully we can make it bigger and better.”

The competition was judged by a panel of five judges which comprised Russel Lake, Hon. Dr. Adrian Augier, Natalie Fannis, Dahlia Francois, and Delia Guard.

Meanwhile, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Physical Planning, Natural Resources and Co-operatives, Ignatius Cadet, welcomed the Open Day which he said provided the opportunity to demystify the common perception of agriculture.

“Agriculture, for a while, has been seen as a dirty occupation, it entails working the soil and so on; and some connotation of slavery; however, the truth is agriculture offers very fascinating possibilities for careers. The Department of Agriculture is responsible for four main portfolios: Agriculture, Fisheries, Natural Resources, and Cooperatives, and under agriculture there are opportunities in a broad range of areas, for persons especially in the sciences. So we welcome this opportunity to excite and entice our students into the field of agriculture.”

A job shadowing day and ecumenical service also formed part of activities on the Public Service Week Calendar. The theme for this year’s observance was, “Transforming our Public Service, Building Excellence and Promoting Good Governance Through Recognition of Outstanding Service.”

The Open House Competition took place on Friday, June 22nd, 2018.
