(PRESS RELEASE VIA SNO) – On Friday June 22nd, staff from the British High Commission in Barbados met with Professor Winston Moore from the Economics Department at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, to discuss the development situation of the poorer Commonwealth countries in the Caribbean.
During the meeting, Mr Mark George, Deputy Head of DFID Caribbean and Professor Moore signed an agreement to commence a short research project that will present the most up to date picture on development challenges across the region. Particularly, those related to climate change, disaster resilience, security and justice and prospects for economic growth.
Mr George warmly welcomed the collaboration with UWI academics whom he noted are very well placed to undertake this research. Once the research is complete, it will feed into UK Government planning on its future aid programme towards the poorer Commonwealth countries in the region.
Professor Moore said the research would be able to demonstrate the complex nature of development challenges in the region. He noted that to really understand the context of the Caribbean, it was really important to look deeply into a range of indicators and trends rather than assess the status of development by just using income per head measures.
The research is expected to be completed by the end of August 2018.
