With its compact size, fuel-efficient engine and well-engineered chassis, transmission and drive-train, the NEW KIA PICANTO is a highly maneuverable, economical and thoroughly likeable small hatchback that challenges strongly for best in class honours.
It’s quiet, efficient 1.2L gasoline engine produces 87ps @ 6000rpm, driving the front wheels through a 4-speed automatic transmission that offers quiet operation and shift points set to maximize smoothness, even in stop-and-go peak-hour traffic.
There is enough feel through the steering to give you the confidence to place the car where you want it and when you need to squeeze into a tight parking space, it is light enough, too, with one of the best turning circles in its class.
Out of town, road and wind noise aren’t particularly prominent and even when you’re asking more of the engine, it remains reasonably muted.
The 1.2-litre engine provides enough power to keep you entertained in town and can tackle longer journeys with relative ease.
Both the steering and suspension feel better than many competitors and the new Picanto also grips the road well. In summary, the new Picanto is nimble around town and agile on the open road.
You will be pleasantly surprised when you enter the new Picanto. Taking a cue from its bigger brother, the Rio, Kia has grafted onto the dashboard of the Picanto a seven-inch touchscreen that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functions, so most users will be able to connect their smartphone fully.
All the main touch points look and feel every bit as good as cars in the segment above and there is a decent amount of passenger space in the rear, where Kia provides three seatbelts.
Boot space has been increased over the previous model, growing from 200 litres to a much more useful 265 litres.
Drop the rear seats down and luggage space increases to 1,010 litres, accessible via a wide opening. Elsewhere in the cabin there are door bins that can fit larger bottles than before, a centre armrest with more storage underneath and a tray in the centre console for more stuff.
The Picanto is a clever, stylish small car that is good value, economical, well-equipped and nice to drive and is available now at Northwest Ltd. John Compton Highway, Castries. Tel 452 1379; email: info@northwestslu.com
