dwight-vennerJAMAICA OBSERVER – The University of the West Indies (UWI) has launched a memorial scholarship in honour of the late economist and former governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), Sir Dwight Venner, who died in December last year.

Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Cave Hill campus, Professor V Eudine Barriteau said the scholarship highlights Venner’s contribution to the development of the region.

“We have established the Dwight Venner Memorial Scholarship to honour the legacy of Sir Dwight Venner, who was the longest serving governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, but at the time he passed was also chair of the Open Campus Council”.

The UWI official said that the scholarship is open to students from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), namely Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Kitts-Nevis, Montserrat, Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands.

“We are honouring him as a UWI man. He graduated from UWI and he was very much a UWI man, an OECS man.

“We are building capacity in economic analysis, banking and finance and we are honouring his legacy and this scholarship joins the Sir Arthur Lewis scholarships that are already in existence to support students from the OECS,” Professor Barriteau said.

Venner served as ECCB governor from 1989-2015.
