Preparatory work has begun at the general site of the Desert Star Holdings Project Ltd (DSH).

The work, which commenced last week, is taking place on a portion of land between the George Odlum Stadium which now houses the St. Jude Hospital and the Beausejour Agricultural Complex.

The work, which is expected to last for a few weeks, includes the clearing of lands and the construction of offices, among others things.

dscn0277Workers on the site say what is taking place currently is not “anything major” but is just to set out the layout for the project.

The US$2.6 billion project was signed by Prime Minister Allen Chastanet and Chairman of Desert Star Holdings Ltd. Ten Ah Khing last year.

According to the workers on the project, some of whom have individual contracts, the work being undertaken at the site will not affect any individual or institution.

“The good thing about this… is that everybody gets a dollar. It’s not like in the past where one big contractor gets everything,” a worker told St. Lucia News Online (SNO).

From the beginning of the project, a number of tradesmen have visited the site seeking jobs, but according to the workers employed on the project, not many workers are needed at the moment.

Efforts to reach Dainea Augier, communications manager at Invest St. Lucia and officials at the Ministry of Infrastructure for comments on the matter, were futile.

When this reporter tried to seek a comment from the Malaysian engineer on the project, he said: “I don’t know what is happening…”

SNO understands that the commencement of the project has now propelled the various organisations, who vehemently oppose the project in its present form, to intensify their protest against the project.

Recently, the Vieux-Fort Concern Citizens Coalition for Change has expressed its opposition to the project by organising a few protest marches and a town hall meeting to explain to the public the demerits of the project.

The main opposition party, the St. Lucia Labor Party, has also held several public meetings criticising the project.
