Digicel Celebrates 37th Independence Anniversary with St. Lucians

PRESS RELEASE – As St. Lucia commemorates yet another Independence Anniversary, Digicel is also celebrating with the government and people.

On Monday February 22nd, 2016, St. Lucia will mark the observation of thirty-seven (37) years as an independent nation under the theme ‘The Journey Continues…’ A series of national and community events to mark the celebration will be held across the island of which Digicel is proud sponsor.

Digicel has fostered some new partnerships for this year’s Independence celebrations as well as continued to support staple events and activities. One such new partnership is with the St. Lucia Moto X Club.

The national sporting club which has been established since 1991, annually puts on the Independence Road ride for which scores of local and regional riders and cycling lovers’ participate and anticipate however, in 2016 the club has gone one step further with an extraordinary Independence calendar of activities and showcase of talent from Friday February 19th at Pigeon Island to Waterfront Castries on the 21st and Vieux-Fort on the 22nd.

The first ever International Banana and Food Festival presented by the Sothern Tourism Development Corporation which will be held at the Phillip Marcellin Grounds in Vieux-Fort, is also receiving much support from Digicel in their unique presentation and feature on one of St. Lucia’s premiere’s agricultural crop, banana.

In the community of Soufriere, Che Campeche Inc who will be presenting its latest production of ‘Mal Coupan”, will also continue in its quest to promote St. Lucia’s Creole heritage in observance of this year’s Independence at the Soufriere Mini Stadium. Digicel has once again partnered with the community Mon Repos in hosting their Annual Road Relay, the Gros-Islet Community with their Independence fashion show and sporting activities and the Ministry of Agriculture’s Seafood Festival on the Waterfront in Castries on Sunday February 21st.

As the Bayfest team presents the second edition of the street festival in the heart of Rodney Bay, with a fusion of culinary and independence flavor, Digicel has continued to provide support as a key partner for this production. Bayfest will feature an explosion of culinary arts with live demonstrations from some of St. Lucia’s finest chefs both seasoned and junior.

As the field of Culinary increasingly becomes a career choice for many young St Lucians, a number of Hospitality and Tourism students from various programmes, will also have an opportunity to display and the develop  their skills and test their knowledge. Bayfest will take place on Saturday February 20th from 2pm.

Marketing and Communications Executive at Digicel, Miss Louise Victor who commented on Digicel’s involvement and support for St. Lucia’s 37th Independence Anniversary said “Digicel’s continued involvement in the community and also nationally for yet another Independence celebration is one which gives us great joy. We believe in celebrating the achievements of the country and its people in every way hence, our extensive support to various activities taking place across the island. We recognize that not every citizen will be able to be a part of the national activities happening in the northern part of the island therefore, it is important that fringe activities receive just as much support so as to produce extraordinary Independence experiences for all.”
