PRESS RELEASE – Twenty (20) young Saint Lucians participated in the GAMA Learning Institute youth entrepreneurship workshop sponsored by St Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC).
The workshop covered a range of topics including “The Anatomy of an Entrepreneur”, “Personal Vision” and “Overall Strategy”.
Guided by presentations and speeches from professionals in various fields, participants also developed and executed business plans for their own start-ups through which they applied the principles they learnt. The short term businesses developed included car washing, selling of home-made cakes, sweets and ice lollies. All of the groups generated profits from their businesses.
LUCELEC Corporate Communications Manager Roger Joseph says the company committed to the training course because of its blend of themes relating to personal effort, youth and education aimed at producing better leaders, particularly in the field of business.
“We see this as contributing to developing a mind-set where young people will be seeking to develop their own businesses and provide employment for other young people, rather than seeking to get a job somewhere; to be employers rather than employees. The more people we can encourage to think in that direction, the more likely potential solutions to problems like unemployment will be found,” he explained.
The training course was attended by young people aged 14-18.
