PRESS RELEASE – Security Guards employed with Secure St. Lucia Ltd. throughout the company’s operational units around the island will begin a “work-to-rule” as from Monday August 10, 2015.
The “Work to rule” protest by the security guards is a mild attempt to demonstrate their disgust with the snail pace manner in which the Department of Labour is handling a $700,000.00 retroactive payment in overtime due to them by Secure St. Lucia Ltd.
Some two (2) weeks ago the Department of Labour guaranteed a meeting which would bring the Management of Secure St. Lucia Ltd, the Minister of Labour and officials from the National Workers Union (NWU) together to bring closure to this matter. To date that has not happened.
The Leadership of the NWU is standing firm behind the action of the workers and hope that this matter will be resolved urgently.
Editor’s note: “Work-to-rule is an industrial action in which employees do no more than the minimum required by the rules of their contract, and precisely follow safety or other regulations in order to cause a slowdown, rather than to serve their purposes. Such an action is considered less disruptive than a strike or lockout; and just obeying the rules is less susceptible to disciplinary action. Notable examples have included nurses refusing to answer telephones and police officers refusing to issue citations. Refusal to work overtime, travel on duty, or sign up to other tasks requiring employee assent are other manifestations of using work-to-rule as industrial action. – Wikipedia
